Where we are now

These are some of the children I have been helping in An Hoa. They are (l to r) Sarah, Fred, Sally, Tony, Emily, Superman, David, Mary, Peter, Nancy, Elsa and Lucy. The frantic blur in the foreground is Messi and somehow missing from the photo are John and Anna. I like this photo because it conveys the energy, enthusiasm and sheer enjoyment these children get from learning.

Currently we meet up wherever we can. This photo was taken in a spare room at Emily's home. We have set up a small blackboard and the children sit on benches at old wooden desks. Emily's mum is an English teacher at An Hoa Number 2 Primary School. I think the desks and benches were discarded from there.

Here's my other class. We can see Nick, Green, Messi (popular name), Steven, Steve, Stuart, Sophia and Lucky. Obscured is James, and out of shot are John, Suarez and Taylor. This room is a lean-to attached to the side of Taylor's house. His mother is also an English teacher and she conducts extra lessons for her students in this room. It isn't much bigger than what you can see and all available space is taken up with the benches and desks. It is open to the weather and has a corrugated asbestos roof. It means it is cool and breezy, but also deafening during the frequent tropical downpours. There is a large whiteboard.

My most interesting location to date was a family altar room. I don't have a photo but most of the space was taken up with the altar for offerings to the family ancestors. Again, the space was completely occupied with tables and chairs. The children are crammed into serried rows. They have books and pens. They look like they are ready to learn in an appropriate environment for maths or geography. But for speaking English, it's hopeless.
